Wish comes true for firefighter’s daughter
In a heartfelt and memorable farewell, the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District (LRFPD) and Chicago firefighters came together to celebrate Paige Spicka, a brave six-year-old girl who has overcome incredible challenges. Born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, Paige has endured multiple surgeries since birth. Today, she was honored with a special send-off as she prepared for her dream trip to Disney World in Orlando, made possible by the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
The celebration took place at Station 53, where LRFPD members, their families, and friends gathered from 10 AM to noon for a fun-filled going-away party. The event featured Disney movies, cake, an obstacle course, and a pinata filled with candy—perfect for keeping the excitement alive before the long flight ahead. Paige received a custom set of firefighter turnout gear, a symbol of the support and love she’s received from her community.
After the festivities, it was time to head to O’Hare Airport. A special detail of the day was the use of Engine 51, which transported Paige and her family with the help of a command car. Her pink car seat was carefully placed in the officer’s seat, making the journey both safe and meaningful. Along the way, Paige communicated with her dad through a headset, confirming that she was ready for the adventure ahead.
Upon arrival at O’Hare, Chicago firefighters from the Chicago Fire Department (CFD) welcomed Paige with open arms. They presented her with a CFD t-shirt and escorted her into the terminal, ensuring a smooth and memorable departure. The Lincolnshire team was met at the jetway by the family, sharing one final moment of joy and pride.
Throughout the day, the spirit of unity and compassion shone brightly. From the local fire crews to the airport staff and photographers like Tim Olk, everyone played a part in making this day unforgettable for Paige and her family. Their efforts truly reflected the power of community and the importance of supporting those in need.
As the plane took off, it carried not just a young girl with a dream, but a message of hope, courage, and love. The Make-A-Wish Foundation continues to change lives, and today was a perfect example of how far a little kindness can go.

"Today was a day of celebration. We celebrated a gift, a six-year-old gift named Paige Spicka. She was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, basically with half her heart. She has gone through more in her short time than most would in their lifetime. Paige was granted 'her wish' to go to Disney World in Orlando, Florida, to meet Mickey Mouse and sleep in Cinderella’s castle through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Wisconsin Chapter. Paige was given a send-off by her second family, the Lincolnshire Riverwoods Professional Fire Fighters Association Local 4224, Chief Fred Kruger, and the Lincolnshire Riverwoods Fire Department. Paige was surrounded by friends and family and driven to O’Hare International Airport where she was met by our brothers of the Chicago Fire Department Local 2 and escorted to the gate for her trip. The local would like to give our sincere thanks to Chief Kruger and staff, Assistant Deputy Fire Commissioner John McNicholas (CFD), Deputy District Chief Jerry Knapp (CFD), Larry Langford (CFD), Karen Pride (Chicago Aviation), Tim Olk, and the crews from CFD E-10, HazMat 5-1-2, and Squad 7."
