Illinois Fire Safety Alliance Camp for burn victims

From IllinoisFireSafetyAlliance.com:

From June 19 to 25, 2016, around 70 children who have suffered burn injuries will gather at the 26th annual Camp “I Am Me” in Ingleside, Illinois. Organized by the nonprofit Illinois Fire Safety Alliance (IFSA), this special camp is held at YMCA Camp Duncan and offers a wide range of traditional summer camp activities along with unique programs tailored to the needs of burn survivors. While it costs about $2,400 to send one child to camp, all participants attend for free, thanks to the generous support of donors and sponsors.

"Burns can happen in many ways — from scalding water, chemicals, fire, or even electricity," says a representative from IFSA. "These kids are just a small part of the hundreds of Illinois children who suffer burns each year. We work closely with hospital burn units to raise awareness and reach more families. Our mission is to provide every burn-injured child in the state with this life-changing opportunity."

Beyond the fun of typical camp activities like swimming, hiking, and crafts, the campers also take part in character-building exercises, journaling, and therapeutic sessions. These sessions are designed to help them process their experiences in a safe, supportive environment where they can connect with others who understand what they're going through. Many of these resources aren't available in their local communities, making the camp even more valuable.

"Many kids feel isolated after a burn injury," explains Zaleski, a volunteer with IFSA. "They might face bullying or feel ashamed of their scars. But here, they realize they’re not alone. The camp helps them regain confidence and embrace who they are. It’s a powerful experience that often has a lasting impact on their lives."

More than a third of the camp's volunteers are former campers who return to give back. In addition, firefighters, medical professionals, teachers, and business leaders also donate their time — often one volunteer for every camper. This strong community support makes the camp possible year after year.

On Wednesday, June 22, the camp will host an Appreciation Day event starting at 11:00 a.m. with a fire apparatus parade featuring sirens and emergency vehicles from across the state. Following the parade, guests can enjoy lunch at noon and a special ceremony at 1:00 p.m. to honor donors, volunteers, and supporters. Later in the day, campers will take part in a Fun Fair filled with carnival games, face painting, dunk tanks, bounce houses, and prizes — a celebration of joy and resilience.
