Wish comes true for firefighter’s daughter

In a heartwarming display of community support, firefighters from the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District and their Chicago counterparts at O’Hare Airport came together to celebrate and send off six-year-old Paige Spicka on her dream trip to Disney World. Thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Paige’s wish came true after she received a customized set of turnout gear this afternoon, marking the beginning of a memorable farewell event. The celebration took place at Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Station 53 from 10 AM to noon, where LRFPD members, their families, and friends of the Spicka family gathered for a special send-off party. The event featured Disney movies, cake, an obstacle course, and a pinata filled with candy, all designed to make the day extra special for Paige, who was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome and has undergone multiple surgeries since birth. After the festivities, it was time to head to O’Hare Airport for the flight to Orlando. A specially arranged transport by Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Engine 51, accompanied by a command car, carried Paige and her family. Her pink car seat was carefully secured in the officer's seat, allowing her to travel comfortably with her father by her side, communicating through a headset to let him know she was ready to go. Upon arrival at Mannheim Road, the group was met by Chicago Fire Department units, including 5-1-2 and Squad 7, who escorted them to the terminal. The CFD firefighters presented Paige with a custom t-shirt and accompanied her to the gate, while the Lincolnshire team was welcomed at the jetway for a final farewell. The entire journey was filled with emotion and joy, as the community rallied around a young girl whose courage and strength have inspired many. From the moment she arrived at the station to the moment she stepped onto the plane, Paige was surrounded by love, support, and unforgettable memories. This touching event was captured by photographer Tim Olk, who documented every moment of the day. His gallery offers a beautiful glimpse into the kindness and dedication of the firefighters and volunteers who made this dream come true. From the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District: "Today was a day of celebration. We celebrated a gift — a six-year-old gift named Paige Spicka. She was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, essentially with half her heart. She has gone through more in her short life than most would in a lifetime. Through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Wisconsin Chapter, Paige was granted her wish to visit Disney World in Orlando to meet Mickey Mouse and sleep in Cinderella’s Castle. She was sent off by her second family, the Lincolnshire Riverwoods Professional Fire Fighters Association Local 4224, Chief Fred Kruger, and the Lincolnshire Riverwoods Fire Department. Surrounded by friends and family, she was driven to O’Hare International Airport, where she was met by our brothers of the Chicago Fire Department Local 2 and escorted to the gate for her trip. The local would like to express its sincere thanks to Chief Kruger and staff, Assistant Deputy Fire Commissioner John McNicholas (CFD), Deputy District Chief Jerry Knapp (CFD), Larry Langford (CFD), Karen Pride (Chicago Aviation), Tim Olk, and the crews from CFD E-10, HazMat 5-1-2, and Squad 7." Paige’s journey is not just about a vacation — it’s about hope, resilience, and the power of community.
