From IllinoisFireSafetyAlliance.com: From June 19 to 25, 2016, around 70 children who have suffered burns will gather at the 26th annual Camp “I Am Me†in Ingleside, Illinois. Organized by the nonprofit Illinois Fire Safety Alliance (IFSA) and held at YMCA Camp Duncan, this unique camp offers burn survivors aged 8 to 16 a chance to enjoy traditional camp activities along with specialized sessions tailored to their needs. Despite the cost of $2,400 per child, the camp is completely free, thanks to generous donations from individuals and organizations. "These kids are burned due to various causes—scalds, chemicals, fire, or even electricity," says an IFSA representative. "While they make up only a small portion of the hundreds of Illinois children burned each year, we work closely with hospital burn units to raise awareness and reach more families. Our mission is to ensure every burn-injured child in the state has access to this life-changing experience." Beyond the usual camp fun, participants take part in character-building exercises, journaling, and therapeutic sessions. These activities are designed to help them build confidence, connect with others, and explore new ways to heal. For many, it's the first time they've been in a safe, supportive environment where they can express themselves without fear or judgment. "Many kids feel isolated after a burn, especially if they're teased or misunderstood by peers back home," explains Zaleski, a volunteer with IFSA. "Camp helps them realize they're not alone, and that it's okay to be themselves. The impact of this experience can last a lifetime." One of the most inspiring aspects of the camp is its strong sense of community. Over one-third of the volunteers are former campers, returning to give back. In addition, firefighters, medical professionals, teachers, and business leaders also contribute their time, ensuring there’s at least one volunteer for every camper. On Wednesday, June 22, the public is invited to attend Appreciation Day. Starting at 11:00 a.m., a fire apparatus parade will take place, featuring sirens and emergency vehicles from across the state arriving at the camp. Following the parade, guests can enjoy lunch at noon and a special ceremony at 1:00 p.m. to honor donors, supporters, and volunteers. Later in the day, campers will have fun at the Fun Fair, complete with carnival games, face painting, dunk tanks, bounce houses, and lots of prizes.
