House fire in Long Grove, 3-31-16
From a reader:
> CODE 4: 3699 CUBA RD
> Thu 03/31/2016 @ 21:46
So I was scrolling through my social media when this post popped up from a friend who happened to be near the fire. It started out as a brush fire reported by the police. Long Grove firefighters were dispatched there and, once they got down the long driveway, they found a fully involved, vacant one-story building. They immediately called it a Code 4 situation and decided to go defensive right away to stop the fire from spreading to the surrounding thick brush and trees. Later on, the incident was upgraded to a Box Alarm, but only for tenders.
Here’s how it played out with the equipment and mutual aid support:
- Three main lines were in operation: two 2½-inch lines and one 1¾-inch line. At some point during the firefighting efforts, one of the 2½-inch lines was swapped out for a Blitzfire portable master stream.
- Tender 56 served as the attack pumper.
- Prospect Heights Tanker 9 was the first mutual aid unit to arrive and began feeding water to Tender 56.
- Palatine Rural Tanker 36 was the second mutual aid tanker and also assisted with water supply.
- Palatine Engine 82 positioned itself in the driveway and connected to a large-diameter hose (LDH) from Cuba Road to pump water directly to Prospect Heights Tanker 9.
### Partial List of Companies Involved:

I was able to grab some photos from the scene, and here’s what I saw:

The whole thing lasted for hours, and it was intense to watch the firefighters work so hard to contain the blaze. By the end of the night, the flames had been mostly brought under control, but it was clear the building had taken quite a beating. I’m glad everyone made it out safe, though—it could have been a lot worse if not for their quick response!
