Autodesk honors 2023 Visual Effects Society student award winner

At the prestigious Visual Effects Society (VES) Awards ceremony held just before February 15th at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California, the annual celebration of groundbreaking visual effects in film, television, and other media reached its 21st edition. This year's event paid special tribute to emerging talents through the "Outstanding Visual Effects in a Student Project" category, which was generously sponsored by Autodesk for the 16th consecutive year. Among the standout projects was a remarkable short film titled *“A Calling. From the Desert. To the Sea”*, directed by Murad Abu Eisheh. A group of exceptionally skilled students from Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg took the stage to accept the award on behalf of the film. They were honored by Autodesk Chief Marketing Officer Dara Treseder for their exceptional work, which involved creating a visually stunning VFX breakdown that can be viewed [here](#). The film itself tells the poignant story of two young sisters who flee their difficult circumstances to embark on a perilous desert journey in search of a brighter future. Throughout their odyssey, the younger sister is tormented by vivid nightmares featuring a menacing desert creature—a symbolic representation of inner fears and challenges. Despite these haunting visions, the sisters ultimately triumph over the creature, reaching a shimmering horizon that symbolizes hope and freedom. Leading this ambitious project was VFX Supervisor Mario Bertsch, who oversaw a team of 30 artists over two years to deliver 28 breathtaking visual effects shots. Key contributors included Lennard Fricke and Max Pollmann for VFX production, Creature and Animation Lead Till Sander-Titgemeyer, Compositing Lead Lukas Löffler, Rigging Technical Director Lukas Kapp, and Technical Director Pascal Schober. The team harnessed advanced tools such as Autodesk Maya for animation and rigging, Arnold for rendering, ShotGrid for project management, and RV for shot reviews to bring the film’s intricate visuals to life. Reflecting on the achievement, VFX Producer Lennard Frick expressed immense pride: “Receiving the VES Student Award is a testament to the incredible dedication of our entire team. It’s an honor not only for us but also for Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg, the institution that nurtured our growth. Working collaboratively on this project has been both enjoyable and educational, and we’re excited to see how this recognition will open doors for our futures.” Autodesk CMO Dara Treseder echoed similar sentiments: “We’re deeply impressed by the next generation of visual effects artists and thrilled to support their innovative contributions to the industry. Congratulations to all nominees and particularly to the team behind *‘A Calling. From the Desert. To the Sea’*. Your work inspires us all.” Other notable entries at the awards included films like *“Boom”* by Romain Augier, Charles Di Cicco, Gabriel Augerai, and Laurie Pereira De Figueiredo, *“Macula”* by Hady Abou Ghazale, Lothaire Rialhe, Marta Rodriguez-Noriega Nava, and Jules Machicot, and *“Maronii”* by Maxime Guitet, Dimitri Allonneau, Lucas Plata, and Ngoc Mai Nguyen. Each nominee showcased unique digital artistry and compelling narratives, further highlighting the diversity and creativity within the field. For those interested in exploring more about *“A Calling.
