Autodesk honors 2023 Visual Effects Society student award winner
As the Visual Effects Society opened its 21st annual awards ceremony on February 14th, 2023, at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, CA, the air buzzed with excitement and anticipation. This prestigious event honors the best in visual effects from the past year, spanning films, television, and emerging media. One of the highlights of the evening was the "Outstanding Visual Effects in a Student Project" category, generously sponsored by Autodesk for the sixteenth consecutive year. It's a testament to the growing talent pool among students and the rising standards in the field.
Among the standout entries, a group of exceptionally skilled students from the renowned Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg took home the coveted award. Representing their university, they were recognized for their remarkable work on the short film *“A Calling. From the Desert. To the Seaâ€*, directed by Murad Abu Eisheh. On stage, the team received their award from Autodesk's Chief Marketing Officer, Dara Treseder. Their submission included a detailed breakdown of the film's visual effects, which can be explored further [here](#).
The short film itself tells a compelling story of two young sisters fleeing their dire circumstances to embark on a perilous journey through the desert in search of hope. Haunted by recurring nightmares, the younger sister encounters a terrifying desert creature at every turn. Symbolizing the internal struggles and fears they face, the monster emerges from her dreams, wreaking havoc on the desert landscape. Despite these challenges, the sisters ultimately triumph over the beast, reaching a shimmering horizon that represents their newfound freedom.
Guiding this ambitious project was VFX Supervisor Mario Bertsch, who led a team of 30 artists over two years to deliver 28 stunning visual effects shots. Key contributors included Lennard Fricke and Max Pollmann, who provided VFX production expertise. Creature and Animation Lead Till Sander-Titgemeyer, Compositing Lead Lukas Löffler, and Rigging Technical Director Lukas Kapp collaborated closely with Bertsch, Fricke, and Pollmann, alongside Technical Director Pascal Schober. Together, they utilized cutting-edge technology such as Autodesk Maya for animation and rigging, Arnold for rendering, ShotGrid to streamline production, and RV for reviewing shots. These tools played crucial roles in bringing the hauntingly beautiful desert vistas and lifelike creatures to life.
Reflecting on the achievement, VFX Producer Lennard Frick expressed his team's immense pride in receiving the VES Student Award. He noted, "Given the high quality of work presented by all nominees, it's an incredible honor. Our crew worked tirelessly, and we're grateful to Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg for supporting us." The team's collaborative spirit and passion for storytelling shone brightly throughout the project, setting the stage for future opportunities in their careers.
Autodesk's Dara Treseder echoed similar sentiments, praising the next generation of visual effects artists. She remarked, "We're inspired by the creativity and dedication these students demonstrate. Their ability to craft such powerful narratives is a testament to their potential to shape the future of our industry." Treseder extended her congratulations not only to the winning team but also to all nominees, emphasizing the importance of diverse digital artistry in pushing creative boundaries.
