The localization of environmental protection flame retardants for engineering plastics is imminent
The launch of FR-245, an eco-friendly flame retardant for engineering plastics, marks a significant milestone as China moves away from importing such materials. On March 22, Guangdong Baibaishun Petrochemical Co., Ltd. will officially start its 3,000-ton-per-year production facility, signaling the successful industrialization of this environmentally sustainable product. Zhou Zhengyu, secretary-general of the China Flame Retardant Society, emphasized in an interview that this development represents a major breakthrough for domestic flame retardant technology.
With the European Union and the U.S. phasing out decabromodiphenyl ether (DBDPE) and decabromodiphenylethane (DBDPE), the global petrochemical industry has been actively seeking alternatives. FR-245, also known as tricyanurate, has emerged as a promising solution. Developed initially by Israel’s Dead Sea Group to replace traditional brominated flame retardants, it offers superior environmental performance, better lightfastness, and improved color stability compared to its predecessors.
In China, demand for engineering plastics has been growing rapidly, with a five-year average growth rate of 30.3%. Experts predict that by 2010, the total demand for engineering plastics could reach 1.67 million tons, creating a massive need for high-quality flame retardants. Despite this, the market had long relied on imports, with prices reaching up to 50,000 yuan per ton.
Previously, only the Dead Sea Group was producing this type of eco-friendly flame retardant. Domestic manufacturers, like Jiangsu Haohua Fine Chemical, used Japanese technology but still depended on imported raw materials, resulting in higher costs. Other companies were exploring options, but no viable products had reached the market yet.
Now, with the new production line at Baibaishun, China is taking a leading role in this field. The project, fully developed domestically, uses green chemical processes and achieves a purity of over 99.5%, making it a competitive alternative to imported products. With lower costs and high performance, FR-245 is expected to play a key role in the future of engineering plastics in China and beyond.
The methoxy polyethylene glycols (MPEGs), also referred to as Polyethylene Glycol methyl ethers, are high molecular weight polymers similar in structure and nomenclature to the polyethylene glycols. Because of the potential for repeated cutaneous exposure of humans to MPEG-350 and the known toxicity of lower alkylene glycol ethers such as ethylene glycol monomethyl ether (EGME), studies were conducted to evaluate the potential toxicity and irritation of MPEG-350 following repeated, cutaneous treatment.
