China's first non-food fuel ethanol project put into production

In the face of rising global food and oil prices, a new energy solution is emerging in China, addressing two critical bottlenecks. A groundbreaking project by COFCO (0606.HK), a leading Chinese agribusiness company, has officially started producing fuel ethanol from non-food feedstocks, signaling a shift in the country’s energy strategy. The first non-food fuel ethanol plant in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region has begun operations, with an annual production capacity of 200,000 metric tons. This facility aims to meet local demand for biofuel and marks a significant step in COFCO’s transition toward renewable energy. The project, which began trial runs last December, has already produced 100,000 metric tons of ethanol, reinforcing COFCO’s position as the largest domestic supplier of biofuels. COFCO, one of China’s top food and oil producers, launched a major 10-billion-yuan new energy initiative back in 2006. After five years of development, it emerged as a leader in the country's alternative energy sector. However, the use of food crops like corn for ethanol production has long been controversial, especially amid global food price surges. In response, the Chinese government imposed strict controls on grain-based ethanol, leading to a decline in related stocks. This new project, however, uses cassava—a non-food crop—as its primary feedstock, avoiding the controversy surrounding food-to-fuel conversions. This innovation not only aligns with government policies but also offers a sustainable solution to rising energy costs. As a result, the market has responded positively. Shares of China Agri Holdings rose 1.4% following the announcement of the Guangxi plant’s launch, despite broader market declines. With growing concerns over food security and energy independence, COFCO’s move represents a strategic and environmentally conscious approach to energy production. By focusing on non-food sources, the company is paving the way for a more balanced and sustainable energy future in China.

PTFE Semi-finished Products

PTFE belongs to the group of thermoplastics but cannot be processed using the standard techniques for thermo-plastics such as e.g. injection molding. The very high molecular weight results in a too high melt viscosity and allows PTFE to be processed only with the special press and sinter methods as used in the manufacture of sintered ceramics. PTFE powder is compressed under very high pressure followed by a sintering procedure in which the PTFE particles fuse together.
