The localization of environmental protection flame retardants for engineering plastics is imminent

The launch of FR-245, an eco-friendly flame retardant designed for engineering plastics, marks a significant milestone in China's chemical industry. For the first time, the country is set to bid farewell to its reliance on imported flame retardants with the commissioning of a 3,000-ton-per-year production facility at Guangdong Baibaishun Petrochemical Co., Ltd., scheduled to begin operations on March 22. According to Zhou Zhengyu, the secretary-general of the China Flame Retardant Society, this development signifies the successful industrialization of FR-245, a green alternative that meets global environmental standards. With the European Union and the United States implementing regulations to phase out decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209) and decabromodiphenylethane (DBDPE), the global petrochemical sector has been actively seeking sustainable flame retardant solutions. The production of eco-friendly flame retardants for engineering plastics has become a focal point for researchers and manufacturers worldwide. FR-245, also known as tri-cyanurate, has emerged as a promising substitute for traditional brominated flame retardants in materials like polyester, ABS, impact-resistant polystyrene, and polycarbonate. Originally developed by Israel’s Dead Sea Group, FR-245 offers superior environmental performance compared to BDE-209, with better lightfastness and resistance to yellowing. It also provides improved flowability and color stability over DBDPE. As demand for engineering plastics continues to surge, the market for flame retardants is expected to grow rapidly. Over the past five years, the domestic demand for the five major engineering plastics has grown at an annual rate of 30.3%, with projections indicating that total demand could reach 1.67 million tons by 2010. Before the domestic production of FR-245, the only global supplier was the Dead Sea Group. Domestic companies like Jiangsu Haohua Fine Chemical used Japanese technology but relied entirely on imported raw materials, leading to higher costs. Other local firms were conducting research, but no commercial products had yet been launched. As a result, China’s 100,000-ton market remained fully dependent on imports, with prices reaching 50,000 yuan per ton. The new 3,000-ton-per-year production line at Guangdong Baibaishun Petrochemical Co., Ltd., developed independently and supported by the China Flame Retardant Society, represents a breakthrough in green chemistry. After completing a pilot test on January 30, 2007, the project has achieved a product purity of 99.5% or higher, making it a viable and cost-effective alternative to imported options. With its eco-friendly production process and competitive pricing, FR-245 is well-positioned for widespread adoption in the engineering plastics industry.
