**What role does automation play at Suburban?**
Automation is a broad concept that we implement in various ways at Suburban. For instance, we use automation systems to improve testing procedures for quality assurance, monitor pressure and speed settings on sewing machines, and handle the loading and unloading of parts into our CNC machines.

**How is automation integral to our core values?**
**Craftsmanship:** High-quality automation ensures rigorous quality checks. Every step of production can include automated inspections, such as machine probing in CNCs, visual inspections, and weight checks. Any part that doesn't pass these automatic inspections gets flagged for further scrutiny.
**Can-Do Attitude:** Automation is all about turning ideas into reality. If it can be imagined, it can be built. I often tell people, “If you want it to tap dance, I’ll make it tap dance—just tell me what you need it to do.â€

**Tell us about the new robot.**
The new robot is a Fanuc CRX20iA/L collaborative robot, affectionately named "Romeo." It can lift up to 20 kg (about 44 lbs) safely around humans. We chose Fanuc because of its robust payload capabilities, which are crucial since some of our largest machine blanks weigh close to three-quarters of Romeo’s capacity.

**What excites you most about the new robot and why was it chosen for this application?**
As an automation engineer, I selected Fanuc cobots because they are user-friendly and easy to program—even for non-programmers. With only one Automation Engineer on staff, I needed a robot that could be quickly learned and taught to others. This approach ensures smooth operations without constant supervision.
Machinists love spinny wheels, and since I aim to train them on robot programming, choosing a robot that speaks their language was essential. Fanuc fits the bill perfectly.
Moreover, my priority is reducing operator stress. By automating repetitive tasks, I aim to make life easier for operators, many of whom I still feel connected to.

**How will the new robot impact daily operations at Suburban?**
Once "Romeo" proves itself with its initial part, it will eliminate the need for a skilled machinist to stand by a CNC machine loading and unloading parts. This will free up valuable resources to focus on optimizing other processes, designing new programs, and addressing labor shortages.
Unlike human operators, "Romeo" won’t require breaks or get distracted. It can work around the clock, adding over five productive hours to our schedule daily while freeing up labor for other critical tasks.
In the future, once its vision system is installed, "Romeo" could move between machines to handle different parts.

Reduced downtime and enhanced in-process quality checks will lead to shorter lead times and improved product reliability. Lower labor costs and higher throughput might even translate into cost savings for our customers.

With global labor shortages worsening, automation has become indispensable. By collecting data from all machines, we can identify areas for process optimization. Fewer operators will be needed, allowing for consistent or even increased output.
