Prospect Heights Box Alarm, 11-3-14

This is from Larry Shapiro:

The Prospect Heights Fire Department was called to a house fire around 3:00 AM on Monday at 1201 N. Stratford Road, near Rand Road. Upon arrival, they were told that a 14-year-old boy was trapped inside while the rest of the family had already evacuated. Several police officers attempted to search for the boy, but heavy smoke and intense flames forced them to retreat.

Arlington Heights Engine 2 was the first unit on the scene, facing heavy fire in the center of the house. The street lacked hydrants, so supply lines were stretched to an Arlington Heights street in one direction and to a nearby shopping center across Rand Road. Water pressure was an issue initially when Engine 2 experienced mechanical problems, but additional lines were supplied by Prospect Heights Tower 9 to continue the fight.

A Box Alarm was activated along with multiple ambulances, as two adults from the home and three police officers required medical attention. One ambulance was held in case the boy could still be rescued. Later, it was confirmed that the boy was not at home and was eventually found elsewhere. Two individuals were taken to the hospital for treatment.

As the fire raged through the night, local firefighters worked tirelessly under difficult conditions. The scene was captured by Larry Shapiro, who documented the intensity of the blaze, the efforts of emergency responders, and the aftermath of the incident. His photos show the full extent of the damage, including the fire burning from a basement window well and firefighters cutting through walls in a desperate attempt to save lives.
