Yanshan Petrochemical butyl rubber technical renovation and expansion project started
Yanshan Petrochemical recently officially launched the reconstruction and expansion project of its 45,000-ton-per-year normal butyl rubber production facility. This initiative marks a significant milestone as it will be the first time the company achieves full domesticization of polymerizers. As the expansion progresses, the plant's annual production capacity is expected to reach 135,000 tons by the end of 2010, including 45,000 tons of regular butyl rubber and 90,000 tons of halogenated butyl rubber.
Industry experts note that Yanshan Petrochemical acquired the rights to use and transfer the butyl rubber technology from an Italian company, PI, and integrated it with its own industrial production techniques. As a result, the company now fully owns the complete technology for butyl rubber production. Moreover, Yanshan has a strong supply of isobutylene, a key raw material. By the end of the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" period, the company’s butyl rubber production capacity is expected to meet all its planned targets.
The expansion project will be carried out in two phases. The first phase, completed by the end of 2007, increased the existing plant's capacity to 45,000 tons per year, ensuring sufficient supply for the domestic market for regular butyl rubber. It also began the gradual production of 30,000 tons per year of halogenated butyl rubber. The second phase, completed by the end of 2010, added another 60,000 tons per year of halogenated butyl rubber, bringing the total capacity of both types of butyl rubber to 135,000 tons annually.
Butyl rubber is widely used in various applications due to its excellent air-tightness and heat resistance, including tire inner tubes, inner liners, vulcanizing capsules, cushioning materials, adhesives, potting compounds, and insulation materials. Over the past decade, demand for butyl rubber, especially halogenated butyl rubber, has been steadily rising in the domestic market. This growing need highlights the promising future and vast potential of the industry.
