New "Crown" equipped with newly developed night vision system
On December 25, 2003, at 09:02, Nikkei BP reported that Toyota has introduced a new "Crown" model equipped with an advanced "Nightview System." This innovative night vision technology uses a near-infrared camera to enhance visibility in low-light conditions, particularly in areas not illuminated by the vehicle's headlights. The system projects the captured images onto a front upper display screen, helping drivers detect pedestrians and obstacles more effectively during nighttime driving.
This latest version of the Nightview System differs significantly from the one featured in the "LandCruiser Wagon Cygnus," which was unveiled in August 2002. One key improvement is the elimination of the dedicated near-infrared projectors used in the earlier model. Instead, the new system utilizes the high-beam lights, which are modified with a cut filter. This filter allows for a horizontal illumination pattern using near-infrared light, similar to how high beams work. The filter is designed as a cylindrical unit that wraps around the high beam and can be switched on and off seamlessly with the regular high-beam function. As a result, the system is more compact and cost-effective, with an estimated price of 300,000 yen (approximately 20,000 yuan).
The near-infrared camera remains positioned near the interior mirror, just like in the previous model. However, the new display system offers enhanced functionality. While the original system only showed video footage, this updated version can also overlay speed information and basic navigation data onto the display. This makes the system more versatile and user-friendly, providing drivers with critical information in real time.
Overall, the new Nightview System represents a significant step forward in automotive safety, offering improved visibility and driver assistance without compromising design or affordability. It’s a great example of how technology continues to evolve to make driving safer, especially in challenging conditions.
