New "Crown" equipped with newly developed night vision system
On December 25, 2003, at 09:02, Nikkei BP reported that Toyota has introduced a new version of its Crown model equipped with an advanced "Nightview System." This innovative system uses a near-infrared camera to enhance visibility in low-light conditions, helping drivers detect pedestrians and obstacles that are not visible under regular headlights. The captured images are displayed on the vehicle's front upper screen, providing crucial information during nighttime driving.
While the Nightview System was previously featured in the LandCruiser Wagon Cygnus, released in August 2002, the new version brings several key improvements. One major change is the elimination of the dedicated near-infrared projectors used in the earlier model. Instead, this system utilizes the high-beam headlights, which are modified with a cut filter. This filter allows the high beams to emit near-infrared light while removing visible light, making it more efficient and compact. The filter is designed as a cylindrical cover that can be switched between normal high beam mode and the night vision function.
This design simplifies the system and reduces costs, with an estimated price of 300,000 yen (approximately 20,000 yuan). The near-infrared camera remains positioned near the interior mirror, similar to the previous setup. Another significant improvement is the enhanced display. Unlike the original system, which only showed captured images, the new Nightview System also provides additional data such as speed and basic navigation information, making it more versatile for drivers.
Overall, this upgrade represents a major step forward in automotive safety technology, offering improved visibility and functionality without compromising on design or cost efficiency.
