Chicago 4-11 Alarm Fire 12-29-12 (pt 1)

A major commercial fire broke out today at 2441 W. 21st Street, just after 1 PM. First responders arrived to find a three-story brick factory/warehouse fully involved in flames. The situation quickly escalated to a 4-11 alarm, with an EMS Plan I and a Haz Mat Level I activation. The building was bordered by railroad tracks to the west and elevated CTA tracks to the north, which were shut down for several hours. EMS operations were secured quickly, but the 4-11 wasn’t called off until around 4 PM. Several companies remained on scene throughout the night. Two snorkels (Squad 1 and the reserve) worked alongside four tower ladders (5, 10, 39, and 54). We’ve received a large volume of coverage from multiple contributors, and we’ll be posting more updates over the next few days. **From Josh Boyajian:** Even though I wasn’t on scene, I snapped some shots from Laramie and Ogden in Cicero of the massive header. The header was visible all the way from Berwyn on Ogden Avenue. Police had a four-block perimeter, so no close-ups. Staging was at 22nd and Western. Traffic was a nightmare. Here are some shots of the header and Engine 113 speeding down 22nd Street. Keep up the great work! [Image: Header as seen from Berwyn. Drew Gresik photo] [Image: Heavy smoke from nearby.
