Autodesk & Amazon: Reshaping Design and Engineering in the Cloud

At Autodesk, we've always recognized the power of the cloud—not just for its speed and scalability, but for its ability to connect people, ideas, and technologies across the globe. The cloud has truly transformed the way we design, build, and innovate. It's reshaping industries, enabling new ways of working, and opening up endless possibilities for creators everywhere. Working closely with Amazon Web Services (AWS), Autodesk has been a pioneer in embracing the cloud. Six years ago, we launched AutoCAD 360, a web and mobile-based CAD application that allows millions of users to create, edit, and view over 600,000 unique drawings each month. This was just the beginning of our journey into cloud-based design tools. Our Tinkercad platform, designed for beginners and enthusiasts of all ages, has seen over 25 million designs created, with more than 50,000 new ones added daily. And on our A360 collaboration platform, users upload over 1.5 million files every day—showcasing how deeply the cloud has become part of the creative process. While Autodesk has led the charge in bringing design and engineering software to the cloud, we couldn’t have done it alone. AWS has been a key partner, providing the scalable infrastructure needed to support our growing user base and complex applications. With AWS, we’ve built secure, reliable, and instantly accessible tools that power some of the most demanding workloads in the industry. Thanks to AWS, our customers can now access computing power on demand—paying only for what they use. Whether it’s a single server for an hour or a supercomputer-level resource for days, the cloud makes it possible. This flexibility not only reduces costs but also gives businesses more freedom to experiment, scale, and grow. For example, Airbus and Autodesk partnered to create the world’s largest 3D-printed airplane cabin component, the “bionic partition.” Using generative design powered by AWS, the team developed a structure inspired by nature, resulting in a lighter and stronger part than traditional methods could achieve. Another success story is JE Dunn Construction, which uses Autodesk BIM360 on AWS to streamline collaboration across large-scale construction projects. This integration has improved communication, efficiency, and accuracy on major commercial developments. As Amar Hanspal, SVP of Products at Autodesk, said: “From the powerful capabilities driving every design and rendering to the infrastructure that supports our future, AWS has been essential. We’re excited about the continued innovation ahead, especially through the Forge platform.” Autodesk Forge is a collection of cloud services that connects design, engineering, visualization, and operations. Developers of all sizes are using Forge to create smart, cloud-powered tools that help shape the world around us.
