Pangang's seamless rail welding test succeeded

The fourth-generation rail (PG4) welding test, conducted by the Ministry of Railways, the Institute of Metallurgical Research, the Panzhihua Iron and Steel Products Application Research Center, and the Zhengzhou Railway Bureau, has now moved into the critical phase of rail welding and track laying. The Luoyang Works Section is currently under construction, with plans to complete the first seamless line test section—featuring the strongest rail in China—in just one month. A seamless railway, also known as a long-rail line, involves welding standard-length rails into continuous rails ranging from 250m to 500m in length at a specialized welding factory. These long rails are then transported to the site for further welding, creating either interval or super-interval seamless tracks. Compared to traditional rail lines, seamless tracks eliminate the impact of wheels on the rail head, resulting in smoother and faster train operations. They also extend the lifespan of both the track infrastructure and rolling stock, reduce noise pollution, and lower maintenance requirements. Seamless lines are essential for high-speed and heavy-duty railways and represent a key direction in modernizing railway systems. According to industry experts, railway rails are evolving from traditional pearlite and bainite structures. Among widely used pearlite rails, Panzhihua Iron and Steel’s PG4 online heat-treated rail achieves a strength grade of 1300MPa, leading globally. To fully utilize this high-strength rail in heavy-duty and small-radius curve seamless lines, Panzhihua and the railway authorities initiated a base flash welding test in August, focusing on the welding performance of PG4 rails. The long rails prepared for track laying closely mimic real-world conditions during aluminum thermite welding tests, achieving promising results. These outcomes lay a solid foundation for upcoming on-site welding and paving trials, marking a significant step forward in China's rail technology development.
