Futian and Daimler Commercial Vehicles Cooperation
Foton Motor and Daimler have signed a letter of intent to establish a strategic partnership. The collaboration will involve the formation of a 50:50 joint venture in China, where Daimler will contribute cash, while Foton will transfer its Auman medium- and heavy-duty truck business into the joint venture after an evaluation process. This move aims to combine Foton's strong local presence with Daimler's advanced engineering and brand reputation.
The new joint venture, named Foton Motor and Daimler China Heavy Truck Joint Venture Co., Ltd., will focus on producing Auman-branded heavy trucks equipped with Daimler’s high-performance engines. Specifically, the vehicles will feature the MBOM457 engine, which meets Euro V emissions standards and delivers 460 horsepower. These engines will be integrated into Foton Auman trucks, which will continue to be sold under the Auman brand. In addition, the trucks will also carry the "Mercedes-Benz Power" label, highlighting the technical partnership between the two companies.
Currently, Foton Auman’s production capacity for medium and heavy trucks stands at 100,000 units annually. However, the MBOM457 engine is expected to support up to 45,000 vehicles per year in the first phase. Both parties plan to evaluate and expand production capacity based on market demand in the future.
Beyond the truck segment, the cooperation could potentially extend to other areas, such as Foton’s bus products, given the complementary strengths of both brands in terms of technology, design, and market reach.
This partnership marks a significant step in strengthening the commercial vehicle sector in China and positions both companies to better compete in the evolving automotive landscape.
