Baosteel successfully developed ultra-high strength hot rolling engineering machinery steel

Currently, only a handful of international steel manufacturers are capable of producing 960 MPa high-strength hot-rolled steel used in construction machinery. Recently, Baosteel successfully developed this advanced material, filling a critical gap in the domestic market.
Today, both domestic and global construction machinery industries rely on 960 MPa high-strength engineering steel to manufacture booms for heavy equipment, significantly improving stability and lifting performance. Over the past few years, demand for this type of high-strength steel has been steadily rising. It is expected that consumption will reach between 800,000 and 1 million tons this year. For a long time, China had to depend on imports for this top-tier material.
Baosteel has long been at the forefront of developing high-strength engineering steel, having previously introduced a 700 MPa grade product. Leveraging its production, sales, and R&D capabilities, the company has consistently provided stable supply to downstream industries. Building on this success, Baosteel’s hot rolling production and sales research team closely monitored industry trends and market demands, especially the growing use of 960 MPa materials. Last year, they launched a new product development initiative aimed at enhancing competitiveness and maximizing value.
Through independent innovation, the team conducted extensive research on material composition and process optimization, overcoming key equipment bottlenecks within just six months. The trial production of the new product was a complete success.
