Changan Automobile: Doing Big and Doing More

Changan Automobile Group has experienced remarkable growth over the past two years. Aligned with Ford's strategic focus on the Yangtze River region, Changan has completed its key industrial layout along the river, with Chongqing as the core, Nanchang as the central hub, and Nanjing as a major production base. In 2007, the company produced over 850,000 vehicles, placing it among the top automakers in China, alongside SAIC Motors, FAW, and Dongfeng. This year, Changan set ambitious targets, aiming to exceed one million units in both production and sales. In response to the ongoing consolidation within the automotive industry, Zou Wenchao, Vice President of Changan Automobile Group, emphasized that while government policies encourage companies to expand in size, the real challenge lies in strengthening internal capabilities. By acquiring JMC, Changan has successfully integrated complementary strengths in both passenger cars and commercial vehicles, while also advancing the development of its own independent brand through effective R&D efforts. Zou believes that simply increasing scale without building strong brand value is not sufficient. He argues that only when Chinese brands can achieve mass production of hundreds of thousands of vehicles will they truly be competitive on a larger scale. Looking ahead, Changan remains committed to its self-driven development strategy, continuously enhancing its capabilities and expanding its market presence. The company is determined to grow stronger and establish itself as a leading force in the global automotive industry.
