Changan Automobile: Doing Big and Doing More
Changan Automobile Group has experienced remarkable growth over the past two years. Aligning with Ford's strategic focus on the Yangtze River region, Changan has largely completed its industrial layout along the river, with Chongqing as the leading hub, Nanchang as the central core, and Nanjing as a key production base. In 2007, the group produced over 850,000 vehicles, ranking among the top automakers in China, following SAIC Motors, FAW, and Dongfeng. This year, Changan set ambitious targets, aiming to exceed one million units in both production and sales.
Regarding the ongoing mergers and acquisitions in the automotive industry, Zou Wenchao, Vice President of Changan Automobile Group, emphasized that while the government encourages companies to expand their scale, it also stresses the importance of building strong, sustainable enterprises. Through its ownership of Jiangling Motors Corporation (JMC), Changan has successfully combined strengths in passenger cars and commercial vehicles, achieving effective synergy. Additionally, the development of independent brands has shown significant progress.
Zou believes that simply increasing size without real strength is not meaningful. He argues that for Chinese auto brands to be truly competitive, they must achieve a production scale of hundreds of thousands of vehicles annually. Looking ahead, Changan will continue to follow its own development strategy, focusing on internal growth and strengthening its market position. The company remains committed to innovation, quality, and long-term sustainability in an increasingly competitive industry.
