AIA 2016 highlights include the latest in generative and computational design, cloud collaboration, convergence of game and architecture visualization, and more. For decades, Autodesk has been a close collaborator with architectural design professionals—listening, responding, developing, and innovating alongside you. Together, we’re embracing another evolution of our profession. At AIA 2016, we’ll celebrate how fast the field is changing as we help push the boundaries of BIM and shape the future of architecture in the 21st century. No longer are architects confined to an isolated drafting table. Today’s architects work within a seamless workflow that integrates aesthetics, performance, constructability, coordination, cost savings, and operational efficiency from the very beginning. They collaborate, stay mobile, and connect with engineers, construction consultants, MEP experts, owners, and operations in a dynamic process that turns design dreams into reality. Whether you're attending AIA this year or not, we want to give you a preview of what you'll see, learn, and experience at Autodesk’s booth #3531 in Philadelphia. This two-part series will take you behind the scenes of some of the most exciting innovations in architecture and design. BIM is in our DNA. The potential of extended BIM is now being realized. You may have first known us through AutoCAD, but today, Revit is the core design tool for many architects. It's not just about what Revit can do on its own—it's about what it enables when paired with new tools built on top of it. Revit is now connected to the cloud, faster than ever, and designed with purpose in mind. More on that here. However, Revit is only the beginning of the story. Here’s a sneak peek of what you’ll experience at AIA 2016. Connect anywhere: A360 Team and A360 Collaboration for Revit Your design team is increasingly distributed and on the move. That’s why we’re helping the industry design and build by taking your teams into the cloud. With A360 Team and A360 Collaboration for Revit, dispersed teams can now work together seamlessly in real-time. Autodesk A360 Collaboration for Revit is a service that works with Revit software to connect project teams with centralized access to BIM project data in the cloud. Take the Los Angeles International Airport Midfield Satellite Concourse project, part of a multi-billion-dollar modernization program. Two global design firms, Corgan and Gensler, are working as one team using A360. All project data is stored in the cloud, giving stakeholders real-time access to design versions, comments, schedules, and Revit models. This allows teams to work simultaneously on the same model, regardless of location, without losing time or data. Design-build and joint-venture projects are becoming more common in the AEC industry, requiring high-level collaboration across disciplines, cities, and countries. Instead of investing in expensive IT infrastructure, teams can deploy solutions like A360 Team and A360 Collaboration for Revit and get up and running almost instantly. Visit our booth at AIA to learn more about cloud collaboration. Create anytime: FormIt 360 and FormIt 360 Pro Where and when inspiration strikes is your business. That’s where we come in. Autodesk’s latest design tools let architects sketch ideas on the go, capturing creativity whenever and wherever it hits. But we took it further with FormIt 360 and FormIt 360 Pro. These tools bring 3D digital sketching into the world of Building Information Modeling (BIM). FormIt 360 (free via web or app) is a lightweight, feature-rich tool for quick idea capture, while FormIt 360 Pro adds real-time collaboration, energy analysis, solar simulation, and access to the Autodesk materials library. And with Revit 2017, they’re fully integrated, making it easier to move sketches into BIM models. As Roy Malcolm of DPR Construction says, “I really enjoy FormIt’s interoperability with Revit. It’s something I always missed with SketchUp.†With FormIt, conceptual design isn’t a dead end anymore—it becomes BIM-ready, directly linked to Revit. “I’ve been an architect for 30 years,†says José Bassalo of Brazilian firm Meia Dois Nove. “With FormIt, I feel like I’m drawing again—just on a screen.†If you get inspired at AIA, or want to share your FormIt 360 sketch, come visit our booth. Dream, design without limits: Project Fractal and Generative Design Architectural design is often limited by tight deadlines and the challenge of finding the right expertise at the right time. But with algorithms combining professional knowledge and complex project requirements in a cloud environment, a new era of smart design decisions is emerging. We’re seeing analytical services and scalable computation expand the ability of designers to evaluate more options than ever before, connecting every project to AEC industry expertise for a better built environment. Enter Project Fractal, an experimental generative design tool currently in development. Example of Project Fractal used to evaluate hospital space planning options. Perkins+Will Atlanta is using Project Fractal to explore space planning options for a hospital expansion. The project requires maximizing bed count, ensuring connectivity, and complying with new codes and design guidelines. The team is using Project Fractal to generate multiple scenarios quickly and efficiently. “Solving complex healthcare design problems requires a multidisciplinary approach,†says John Haymaker of Perkins+Will. “Working with Georgia Tech and Autodesk is helping us rethink how hospitals are planned and designed.†Watch the video below to see Project Fractal in action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_dZUAGjyCGY We invite you to join a special focus group at AIA on Thursday afternoon to test Project Fractal and provide feedback. Visit thebuildinglab.info to meet the team. And don’t miss the video below, “Project Fractal Stadium,†to see this technology in action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Pe86qGsYxM Autodesk Class/Theater Schedules, Demos, and Experts For more details on all the activities Autodesk has planned at AIA 2016—including class and theater schedules—visit our event page. Come by booth #3531 to speak with a product expert and learn more about our BIM technologies or get individual technical support. What’s next? Stay tuned. In Part II tomorrow, we’ll dive into computational design, cutting-edge visualization experiments, and how a small firm is tackling climate change—one building at a time—with Revit and Insight 360. The architect is the trendsetter. The mold-breaker. A leader in combating climate change—one home, one building, one design at a time. Nowhere will this be more evident than at The American Institute of Architects (AIA) annual convention, starting May 19 in Philadelphia.
Autodesk’s sketching tool, FormIt 360 Pro, takes 3D digital sketching and connects your conceptual design to BIM.
FormIt 360 Pro features early-stage energy and solar analysis so you can understand performance from day one.
