Source: CDC.gov Cancer remains a significant concern for many workers, especially firefighters. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research to understand whether exposure to chemicals and materials during firefighting increases cancer risk. Explore our ongoing fire fighter cancer study and discover additional publications related to cancer among firefighters.  From a recent study: Exposure–response relationships for select cancer and non-cancer health outcomes in a cohort of US firefighters from San Francisco, Chicago and Philadelphia 1950–2009 ABSTRACT Methods: Researchers analyzed eight types of cancer and four non-cancer outcomes using conditional logistic regression. Each case was matched with 200 controls based on age. Exposure was measured by the number of days spent fighting fires, total fire runs, and total fire hours. Risk models were used to compare high and low exposure levels across different time frames and age groups. Results: Out of 19,309 male firefighters, there were 1,333 cancer-related deaths and 2,609 new cancer cases. A strong link was found between fire hours and lung cancer incidence and mortality. Similarly, an association between fire runs and leukemia mortality was observed. Lung cancer risks increased linearly with exposure, while leukemia risks decreased at higher exposure levels. A protective effect was seen for colorectal and prostate cancers, possibly due to healthier workers being more likely to stay in the job and regular medical check-ups. Conclusions: The study suggests that firefighter exposure is linked to increased risks of lung cancer and leukemia, though the effects are relatively small. These findings support the idea of a causal connection between firefighting and certain cancers. Ongoing follow-up is planned to monitor disease trends in this group.
