Autodesk Announces Powerful New Model Coordination Workflow for BIM and VDC Managers
SAN RAFAEL, Calif., Sept. 22, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK) has introduced a new integrated model coordination workflow between its two leading tools, Navisworks and BIM 360 Model Coordination. This update enhances the Autodesk Construction Cloud by offering construction teams a unified platform to manage the entire model coordination process—from clash detection to issue tracking—within a single solution. The integration allows users to leverage the best features of both platforms, helping to improve construction document quality, save time, reduce schedule risks, and minimize rework.
This new workflow is especially beneficial for architects, engineers, and construction professionals who rely on accurate and efficient coordination. Previously, Navisworks was used by general contractors to identify and resolve clashes, while BIM 360 Model Coordination helped design and trade partners track and self-check issues during the coordination phase. Now, the two systems work seamlessly together, enabling automated clash detection in BIM 360 and allowing issues to be created and assigned from either platform.
"By integrating Navisworks with BIM 360, all project stakeholders—from the field to the office—can now participate in issue tracking and resolution throughout the project lifecycle," said Nick Bobbitt, VDC Manager at Barton Malow. "This makes model coordination a true team effort, giving access to those without deep clash detection experience. It also brings more transparency, which adds real value for our clients."
The updated workflow supports real-time collaboration, allowing design and trade teams to self-check their models automatically. A BIM leader can then focus on major constructability challenges while opening an evolving dataset in Navisworks for detailed cross-disciplinary clash testing. For example, if a structural team uploads a model and detects a clash between a stairwell and a wall, they can assign an issue directly within BIM 360. That same issue can then be tracked and resolved before being sent to the general contractor’s VDC lead.
Additionally, the model can be opened in Navisworks for more in-depth analysis. If a VDC manager notices that an air handling unit is positioned poorly, making maintenance difficult, they can assign issues to plumbing and HVAC teams directly from Navisworks and request design adjustments—all while tracking the progress from one place.
“Addressing design issues before construction begins is critical to avoiding costly delays and rework,†said Sameer Merchant, head of product development at Autodesk Construction Solutions. “This integration creates a powerful new workflow within the Autodesk Construction Cloud, helping teams improve the overall quality of the built environment.â€
