Two E Companies Grab the Right to Pilot Remanufacturing of Auto Parts
The pilot project for the remanufacturing of automotive parts has officially kicked off, signaling a significant transformation in vehicle maintenance practices. According to a report from yesterday, the reporter learned that the National Development and Reform Commission has identified 14 pilot enterprises for the first batch of remanufacturing initiatives, with two companies under the Dongfeng Hongtai Holding Group and Dongfeng Cummins Engine among the selected participants.
Under the newly issued "Administrative Measures for the Remanufacturing of Auto Parts and Pilots," the scope of "regeneration" is currently limited to five key components: engines, transmissions, generators, starters, and steering gears. This marks a major shift, as previous policy barriers had restricted remanufacturers from reusing these parts, forcing them to be recycled as scrap metal instead. Wang Zhenkun, General Manager of Dongfeng Hongtai, highlighted that this change opens up new opportunities for sustainable reuse.
In addition to the 11 component manufacturers, three full-vehicle producers have also been included in the pilot program. To support this initiative, Dongfeng Motor plans to establish an independent subsidiary focused on recycling automotive resources. The first phase of the project will see an investment of 200 million yuan to build a 300-acre pilot base. Once completed, the facility will be capable of recycling 50,000 used vehicles, 100,000 tons of materials, and 100,000 sets of auto parts annually.
The recovered vehicles will primarily come from Dongfeng Citroen and Dongfeng Peugeot models under Shenlong, with plans to expand to other Dongfeng brands in the future. Industry experts estimate that the base could generate a total scale of 2.7 billion yuan within three years. By recycling 100,000 sets of parts annually, at least 30,000 tons of steel can be saved, significantly reducing emissions from steel production.
For consumers, this initiative offers more affordable repair options. The remanufactured parts will be available for vehicle maintenance and clearly labeled as "remanufactured." According to Wang Zhenkun, these parts typically cost about 55% of the price of new ones. Despite being recycled, their quality meets the same standards as new components, and they come with the same warranty. This not only benefits car owners but also promotes a greener, more sustainable approach to automotive maintenance.
