National Development and Reform Commission announces the elimination of backward production capacity
On March 3, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and the State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA) jointly released a list outlining the outdated production capacities of key chemical industries, including citric acid, ethanol, and monosodium glutamate. Alongside this, they also identified specific companies and production lines that were required to be phased out as part of broader environmental and industrial restructuring efforts.
According to the official announcement, the total backward citric acid production capacity slated for elimination reached 23,000 tons, with the majority located in Guangxi and Hebei provinces. The outdated ethanol production capacity to be removed amounted to 421,000 tons, primarily concentrated in Heilongjiang and Liaoning. In addition, the obsolete saccharine production capacity that needed to be eliminated totaled 72,000 tons, mainly in Shandong, Henan, and Sichuan. These measures reflect the government's continued focus on improving energy efficiency, reducing pollution, and promoting sustainable development in the chemical industry.
The move is part of a larger strategy to eliminate outdated and polluting facilities, encouraging the adoption of cleaner technologies and more efficient production methods. This initiative is expected to have a significant impact on regional economies, particularly in the provinces where these industries are most prevalent. While some companies may face challenges in adapting to new regulations, the long-term goal is to create a more environmentally friendly and competitive industrial landscape across China.
