Chicago 2-11 Alarm Fire 12-7-12 part 2

Here's a firsthand account from Eric Haak:

At 1624 hrs on Friday, December 7th, a fire broke out in an abandoned two-story building at the corner of Drake and 16th Street in Chicago. The structure was a 50 x 125-foot residential unit above commercial space. Fire companies on scene included engines 38 and 109, ladders 48 and 32, along with the 14th Battalion. Truck 26, part of the Rapid Intervention Team (RIT), was assigned to the 13th Battalion. Just six minutes after the first units arrived, the situation turned defensive when Ladder 48 reported a dangerously unstable roof. By 1635 hrs, the 14th Battalion had called for a "still and box" operation, and nine minutes later, a 2-11 alarm was issued, followed by a 2-2-1. Squad 1 used its snorkel from a vacant lot to the southeast of the fire, while Tower Ladder 54 set up operations in Sector 1 on 16th Street. Tower Ladder 5 was positioned on Drake Street, directly west of the burning structure.

The fire was intense, and crews worked quickly under challenging conditions. It's always sobering to witness such scenes up close, especially when the buildings are empty and no one is inside. These photos give a real sense of the scale and complexity of the incident. As the alarms escalated, it became clear this was a serious situation. I've been covering fires for years, but every call is different, and this one stood out for its rapid response and coordination. The images captured here reflect the effort and dedication of the firefighters who were on the scene that day.
