Carbon dioxide fracturing technology for the first time succeeded in the construction of domestic CBM wells
On March 7, a reporter learned from the special operations department of the Zhongyuan Oilfield that the first successful application of carbon dioxide fracturing technology in a coal seam gas well at the LG-3 well of the Huaibei Mining Group in Anhui Province has been achieved. This groundbreaking technique was independently developed and implemented by specialized oil and gas engineers. It is entirely owned by Chinese experts and holds a leading position within the country's energy sector.
Currently, most domestic coalbed methane reservoirs are treated using water-based fracturing fluids that carry sand, which can be damaging to the coal seams. In contrast, the carbon dioxide-assisted fracturing method offers less harm to the coal structure and has been widely adopted in the United States, where it has proven highly effective. By injecting carbon dioxide into the coal seam, this technology lowers the methane partial pressure, promoting faster methane desorption. This process not only displaces methane more effectively but also increases the production capacity of individual wells.
Additionally, the injected carbon dioxide enhances the driving force for gas flow toward the wellbore. This is especially beneficial for pressure-sealed coalbed methane reservoirs, helping them overcome resistance in low-permeability seams and improving overall recovery rates. The technology shows great potential for future applications in the coalbed methane industry.
In 2007, the Huaibei Mining Group in Anhui signed a contract with the Zhongyuan Oilfield’s special operations department for the Luling CBM development project. During the fracturing operation at the LG-3 well, technical personnel from the oilfield utilized advanced domestic coal seam gas pressure cracking and drainage technologies. They drew upon successful experiences from carbon dioxide fracturing in natural gas wells, carefully planned the fracturing strategy, and meticulously organized on-site operations. A variety of fracturing techniques were employed to address challenges such as complex coal seam structures, unstable strata, and large amounts of sand, ensuring the safe and high-quality completion of the experimental well.
This successful implementation of new technologies made the Zhongyuan Oilfield the first company in China to apply carbon dioxide fracturing in coalbed methane wells. It also marked a significant breakthrough in the development of carbon dioxide fracturing technology for coalbed methane, providing strong technical support for the large-scale exploitation of coalbed methane resources and enhancing the recovery rate of CBM in China.
