Carbon dioxide fracturing technology for the first time succeeded in the construction of domestic CBM wells
On March 7, a reporter learned from the special operations department of Zhongyuan Oilfield that the first successful application of carbon dioxide fracturing technology in a coal seam gas well at the LG-3 well of Huaibei Mining Group in Anhui Province has been completed. This innovative technique was independently developed and implemented by oil and gas professionals, marking a significant milestone with full intellectual property rights and positioning it as a leading solution within China.
Currently, most domestic coalbed methane (CBM) reservoirs are treated using water-based fracturing fluids that carry sand, which can be damaging to coal seams. In contrast, carbon dioxide-assisted fracturing fluid is less harmful to the coal structure and has been widely used in the United States with impressive results. The technology involves injecting carbon dioxide into the coal seam, which lowers the methane partial pressure and accelerates methane desorption. This process effectively displaces methane from the coal, boosting the production of each well. Additionally, the injected COâ‚‚ enhances the driving force for gas flow toward the wellbore, helping overcome resistance in low-permeability coal seams and improving overall CBM recovery rates. Its potential for broader application is highly promising.
In 2007, Huaibei Mining Group signed a CBM development contract with the special operations department of Zhongyuan Oilfield. During the fracturing work on the LG-3 well, technical teams leveraged advanced domestic coal seam gas pressure cracking and drainage techniques, drawing inspiration from successful COâ‚‚ fracturing experiences in natural gas wells. They carefully designed the fracturing plan and meticulously organized the on-site operations. A range of innovative measures were implemented to address challenges such as complex coal structures, unstable strata, and high sand volumes, ensuring safe and high-quality construction of the experimental well.
The successful implementation of multiple new technologies made Zhongyuan Oilfield the first company in China to apply COâ‚‚ fracturing in CBM wells. This achievement represents a major breakthrough in the field, providing strong technical support for the large-scale exploitation of CBM resources and enhancing CBM recovery rates across the country.
