Autodesk Announces Powerful New Model Coordination Workflow for BIM and VDC Managers
SAN RAFAEL, Calif., Sept. 22, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK) has announced a major enhancement to its construction software ecosystem by introducing a new model coordination workflow that seamlessly connects two of its most popular tools: Navisworks and BIM 360 Model Coordination. This integration is a significant step forward for the Autodesk Construction Cloud, offering construction teams a unified platform to manage the entire model coordination process—from clash detection to issue tracking—within a single, centralized data environment.
This new workflow allows users to automate clash detection directly within BIM 360 Model Coordination and create or assign issues from either Navisworks or BIM 360. By combining the strengths of both platforms, teams can improve the accuracy of construction documents, reduce project delays, and minimize costly rework. The result is a more efficient and collaborative approach to model coordination, which is essential in today’s complex construction projects.
Before construction begins, Navisworks helps general contractors identify and resolve clashes and constructability issues, while BIM 360 Model Coordination enables design and trade partners to create, track, and self-check issues during the coordination process. Now, with this integrated workflow, users can streamline their processes, making it easier to handle complex design challenges and ensure all stakeholders are on the same page.
“With this new integration, every team member, from the field to the office, can participate in issue tracking and resolution throughout the project lifecycle,†said Nick Bobbitt, VDC Manager at Barton Malow. “It’s no longer just about the experts—it’s about empowering everyone involved to contribute, regardless of their experience level. This transparency brings real value to our clients.â€
The new workflow also expands collaboration opportunities by allowing more project partners to engage in model coordination at any time. Design and trade teams can now perform real-time clash detection and self-checks, while BIM leaders can focus on the most critical constructability issues. They can also open the latest design data in Navisworks for more detailed analysis and rule-based checks.
For example, if a structural team uploads a model to BIM 360 and detects a clash between a stairwell and a wall, they can immediately assign an issue to their team. That issue can then be tracked and resolved before being sent to the general contractor’s VDC lead. The model can also be opened in Navisworks, where specific rules and user expertise are applied to identify larger constructability issues. A VDC manager might spot a problem with an air handling unit’s placement, requiring plumbing and HVAC teams to adjust their designs. From Navisworks, the manager can assign issues directly and monitor them until resolution.
“This integration is a game-changer,†said Sameer Merchant, head of product development at Autodesk Construction Solutions. “By bringing together two widely used tools, we’re giving construction firms a more powerful way to address design issues early, which helps avoid costly delays and rework. It’s another example of how Autodesk is driving innovation in the construction industry.â€
