SAN FRANCISCO – (BUSINESS WIRE) – After two months of traveling across the country, the **3DRV: Driven by Design** road tour is revealing how businesses and individuals are using 3D design, reality capture, and fabrication technologies to shape the world in creative and unexpected ways.
TJ McCue, the host of the 3DRV tour and a well-known author, is not only sharing stories but also raising awareness about the power of 3D technology. He’s helping people understand that many of these tools are free or very affordable, making them accessible to everyone—from students to entrepreneurs.
“Whether it's a consumer or a business owner, 3D scanning, printing, and design can be both fascinating and a bit confusing at first,†McCue explains. “But once you start talking about it, people get really interested. They want to learn more and see what they can do with it.â€
The 3DRV tour, which started on May 16, 2014, and is supported by companies like Autodesk, HP, NVIDIA, Stratasys, FARO, and Jayco, will visit over 100 cities across the U.S. in eight months. The first leg of the journey has already showcased some incredible applications of 3D tech—like creating a lunar lander, 3D printing in space, modeling for clean air in hospitals, and even laser scanning a Starbucks.
“There’s innovation happening everywhere, and it’s showing us where the future of manufacturing is heading,†says Amar Hanspal, Senior Vice President at Autodesk. “This tour aligns perfectly with our mission to empower people to design and make anything they can imagine.â€
In just 69 days, McCue has traveled 4,627 miles, made 32 stops, sipped 207 cups of coffee, and written 33 blog posts. “There’s definitely a strong energy out there,†he says. “People feel like we’re standing on the edge of a real revolution in making things—and it’s open to them. From government agencies to small business owners, 3D technology is something that resonates with everyone.â€
“As much as I’ve learned from this trip, I know there’s still so much more to discover,†McCue adds. “It’s clear that manufacturing isn’t just for factories anymore. With today’s affordable tools, anyone can become a designer and a manufacturer.â€
