Jiangsu Increases Sewage Disposal Fees in Taihu Basin

The head of the Jiangsu Provincial Price Bureau recently announced that in response to enhanced pollution control measures in the Taihu Lake Basin and the upgrade of phosphorus and nitrogen removal systems at 169 sewage treatment plants surrounding the lake, the provincial government has decided to increase the sewage treatment fee. The new rate will be raised from the current range of 1.1 to 1.15 yuan per cubic meter to between 1.3 and 1.6 yuan. In line with this decision, the Jiangsu Provincial Price Bureau and the Department of Finance have issued a joint notice to the five cities in the Taihu Lake Basin—Suzhou, Wuxi, Changzhou, Zhenjiang, and Nanjing—directing them to implement the updated sewage treatment fee. The adjustment is expected to be completed within these five key cities, which are critical to maintaining the water quality of Taihu Lake. The revised sewage treatment fee will apply across all administrative areas in Suzhou, Wuxi, and Changzhou, as well as Danyang in Zhenjiang, Jurong County, Gaochun, and other districts in Nanjing that have a significant impact on the lake's environment. This move reflects the province’s commitment to improving wastewater management and protecting one of China’s most important freshwater resources. The increase is seen as necessary to fund advanced treatment technologies and ensure sustainable environmental protection. Officials emphasized that the fee hike will help support long-term efforts to reduce pollution and maintain ecological balance in the region. Residents and businesses in the affected areas are expected to comply with the new rates starting from the designated implementation date.
